Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur beat fourth seed Sofia Kenin 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 for the first time in her career after a tough battle to advance to the next round of the Miami Open.

It has been a long but one-sided rivalry between Jabeur and Kenin. At the WTA level, they have met four times and Kenin leads 4-0, including twice last season at the Grand Slam level.

Kenin defeated Jabeur in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open en route her title win and then brushed past her in the third round of the US Open later that season. However, Jabeur was determined to break the cycle.

Jabber, seeded 27th at Miami, finished with 11 aces to none for Kenin, and she converted 80 percent of her break points to just 43 percent for Kenin.

Jabeur, who became the first Arab woman to reach a grand slam quarter-final at the 2020 Australian Open, broke Kenin in the ninth game of the final set before serving out the match.

“I tried to play my game and to play for revenge, because i’ve been losing a lot against Sofia,” Jabeur said after the match.
