In a landmark move aimed at enhancing communication efficiency and reducing costs, Uganda’s Parliament has approved a single SIM card policy. This initiative will enable mobile phone users to make calls, send messages, and conduct transactions across all networks using just one SIM card, eliminating the need for multiple SIMs.

The policy, championed by Mityana MP Joyce Bagala, received overwhelming support during a parliamentary session chaired by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa. Proponents of the policy argue that it will promote competition among telecom providers, improve service quality, and lower costs for consumers.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa highlighted the benefits of the policy, stating that it will ease communication and reduce the inconvenience of carrying multiple phones. Parliament has now tasked the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) with expediting the implementation process.

Despite the excitement surrounding the policy, ICT State Minister Godfrey Kabbyanga Baluku cautioned that transitioning to a single SIM system will require significant investment in infrastructure. He urged both the government and telecom providers to work together to ensure a smooth rollout.

The single SIM card policy is expected to revolutionise Uganda’s telecommunications landscape, making mobile communication more accessible and affordable for millions of users. As implementation plans take shape, stakeholders are optimistic that this change will enhance connectivity and foster digital inclusion in the country.
