Uganda has marked the 35th anniversary of the Liberation Day, when the ruling National Resistance Army/Movement (NRA/M) took over power after a five-year guerrilla war.

The celebrations were presided over by President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe, 40 km south of the capital Kampala.

The function, which was broadcast live was held under the theme, “Celebrating the 35th National Resistance Movement/Army (NRM/A) victory day, a call to play our duty in securing our nations’ future”.

“That victory came after a long struggle which started in 1965. By 1965, we had already seen the dangers,” said Museveni, who led the 1980 guerrilla war.

Museveni, who won the country’s presidential election on 14th January, said he is embarking on intensifying the East African regional cooperation.

He said in the next years he would intensify the East African cooperation in order to create a bigger market for the region.

“If we don’t solve that problem of market, there is no way these African countries will be prosperous in a modern way,” he said.
