Uganda Records Second Ebola Death

65

A four-year-old child has become the second fatality in Uganda’s ongoing Ebola outbreak, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on Saturday. The outbreak, which was declared in late January, has now resulted in 10 confirmed infections of the Sudan strain of the virus, according to Ugandan health officials.

The child’s death is a setback for health authorities, who had hoped the outbreak was under control after eight patients recovered following treatment. The child succumbed to the disease at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, the country’s only Ebola treatment facility.

The first victim, a male nurse, died on January 30, just before the outbreak was officially announced.

Ugandan health officials, along with international partners, remain committed to strengthening containment measures to prevent further loss of life.
