Ugandan Journalists Boycott Security Events Over Violence

198

Ugandan journalist organizations have united against security force violence, announcing a boycott of all security agency-related activities.

This move comes after several journalists from Nation Media Group and Next Media were assaulted, injured, and had their equipment confiscated during the Kawempe North by-election.

The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA), Uganda Parliament Press Association (UPPA), Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA), and Human Rights Network for Journalists in Uganda (HRNJ) have joined forces to condemn the violence. They urge the government to respect press freedom and ensure the safety of journalists.

The European Union has also weighed in, condemning the attacks and calling on Ugandan authorities to protect journalists’ rights. In response, Chris Magezi, Acting Defense Public Information Officer, acknowledged the allegations and launched an investigation into the incidents.

Magezi assured that those found responsible would be held accountable according to the law. However, journalist organizations remain skeptical, citing a history of violence and intimidation against journalists in Uganda.
