UK Diplomat Commends Nigeria’s Legal Approach To Election Disputes

The British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Mr Dr. Richard Montgomery has commended Nigeria’s utilisation of the judicial system to resolve election disputes at all levels.
The British High Commissioner stated this during a visit to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr Abdullahi Umar Gamduje at the party’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
During the visit, the British High Commissioner expressed the significance of understanding Nigeria’s political landscape and engaging with political parties.
He stressed the importance of comprehending the country’s priorities, challenges, and opportunities in the political process.
The British High Commissioner’s visit is aimed to gain insights and wisdom from the APC National Chairman, acknowledging the party’s significant role in shaping Nigeria’s democracy.
The High Commissioner outlined the goal of sharing this information with British ministers in London to enhance their understanding of Nigeria.
The discussions between the British High Commissioner of the APC leader encompassed various political issues, including gubernatorial elections and runoff by-elections in states such as Imo, state in South East Nigeria, Bayelsa State in The Niger Delta Region Of Nigeria and Kogi State in the North Central Zone of the Country.
Furthermore, the High Commissioner revealed that similar meetings had taken place with leaders of different political parties across Nigeria, underlining his role in comprehending the political context and learning from Nigerian political leaders.
In response, the National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdulahi Umar Ganduje, welcomed the British delegation, recognising the enduring connection between Britain and Nigeria as former colonial masters.
He briefly recounted Nigeria’s political evolution, from a system influenced by the UK to the present presidential system.
Dr. Ganduje expressed the party’s commitment to strengthening political institutions, emphasising their vital role in fostering a robust democracy.
He highlighted the importance of political parties in recruiting members, electing officials, and contributing to good governance.
The Chairman acknowledged the significance of political parties adhering to electoral laws, security agencies, and electoral bodies to ensure the integrity of the democratic process.
He concluded by expressing gratitude for the visit and the desire for stronger ties between the UK and Nigeria, with the aim of learning from the UK’s longstanding political institutions to fortify Nigeria’s own evolving democracy.
The Chairman reiterated the importance of strong political institutions for the sustainability and success of democracy in Nigeria.
