UK, Germany Pledge Support for Nigeria’s Counter-Terrorism Drive

The Defence Attachés of the United Kingdom, UK and Germany to Nigeria have reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insurgency.

Brigadier Tom Harper and Colonel Boris Bovecamp made the pledge during a visit to the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The UK and German officials praised the Nigerian military’s efforts in tackling terrorism in the North East, particularly through Operation HADIN KAI.

They expressed their countries’ intention to provide further support, including training and capacity-building, to enhance Nigeria’s operational effectiveness.

Brigadier Harper highlighted the strong mutual respect and enduring relationship between Nigeria and the UK, citing shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

He commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their professionalism and expressed the UK’s commitment to providing further training support through the British Military Advisory Team (BMATT).

Colonel Bovecamp said Germany is exploring possible areas of future collaboration with Nigeria, including regional cooperation arrangements to enhance operational effectiveness and defeat terrorism.

The Theatre Commander of OPHK, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, welcomed the visit and lauded the significant contributions of the UK and German Defence Attachés to counter-insurgency efforts.

He noted that training initiatives have enhanced troops’ skills and proficiency in responding to evolving security challenges in the region.

Major General Abubakar highlighted areas of future collaboration, including technical expertise, equipment, and logistics support.

The visit concluded with the signing of the visitors’ register, the presentation of souvenirs, and a group photograph.

A statement by the spokesperson of the operation, Lt Col Sani Uba, said the UK and German Defence Attachés’ visit is seen as a boost to Nigeria’s efforts to defeat terrorism in the region and promote stability.
