UK Investigates TikTok, Reddit Over Children’s Data Protection Practices

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched investigations into popular social media platforms TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur over their handling of children’s data.

The move aligns with the ICO’s efforts to enforce the Children’s Code, a data protection framework introduced in 2021 to safeguard young users online.

According to the ICO, the investigation into TikTok aims to assess how the platform processes and utilises personal data from users aged 13 to 17. Authorities are particularly concerned with whether TikTok’s content recommendation algorithms expose minors to inappropriate or harmful material.

Meanwhile, Reddit and Imgur face scrutiny regarding their age-verification measures. The ICO is examining whether these platforms effectively prevent underage users from accessing unsuitable content and whether their current policies comply with the UK’s data protection regulations.

John Edwards, the UK’s Information Commissioner, stressed that while technological advancements in social media are welcome, they must not come at the expense of children’s privacy.

“We will continue to take robust action against companies that fail to uphold their responsibilities in protecting young users. Our priority is ensuring that children’s personal information is processed lawfully and securely,” he stated.

In response to the investigation, Reddit has announced its full cooperation with the ICO. A spokesperson from the company confirmed that measures are being taken to improve compliance with UK age verification laws.

The probe comes amid increasing global concerns about online safety for children. Social media platforms have faced mounting criticism over data privacy, harmful content, and the risks posed by AI-driven recommendations.

In recent months, lawsuits have been filed against TikTok, alleging that its algorithms have contributed to dangerous viral challenges with tragic consequences.
