The UK government is ramping up its oversight of social media platforms, requiring them to evaluate and mitigate online risks as part of broader efforts to enhance digital safety. The country’s media regulator, Ofcom, has ordered social media and online platforms to submit risk assessments by March 31, 2025, detailing the likelihood of users encountering illegal content on their services.

This directive aligns with the Online Safety Act 2023, which mandates companies to tackle criminal activities such as child exploitation, hate speech, and fraud. Platforms failing to comply could face enforcement actions, including potential fines.

“As online spaces continue to evolve, it is crucial that companies take responsibility for the safety of their users,” an Ofcom spokesperson stated. “These risk assessments will help ensure that online platforms proactively address harmful content and provide a safer digital environment.”

Investigation into Children’s Data Protection

In a parallel development, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched an investigation into TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur, scrutinising their handling of children’s personal data. The inquiry aims to determine whether these platforms have adequate safeguards to protect young users from potential exploitation and harmful content.

The ICO’s move follows concerns that social media companies may not be doing enough to prevent underage users from being exposed to inappropriate material. “We are committed to ensuring that children’s data is used responsibly and that they are not put at risk,” an ICO spokesperson said.

The UK’s efforts to regulate digital platforms signal a wider global trend towards enforcing stricter online safety measures. Governments worldwide are pushing for more accountability from tech giants, particularly concerning data privacy and harmful content moderation.

With the deadline fast approaching, social media companies are expected to review and strengthen their policies to align with the new regulations.
