Ultra runner Aleksandr Sorokin breaks his own 24-hour record

Ultra marathon runner, Aleksandr Sorokin breaks his own world record at the IAU 24-hour European championships held in Verona, Italy.

He beat his previous 24-hour record from 2021, running 319.614 kilometres. In 2021, Sorokin ran 309.4 kilometres in 24 hours,  beating the legendary Yiannis Kouris 1997 record of 303.3 km.

The Lithuanian runner averaged a 4:30/km pace over the 24-hour period to cover his previous mark of 303.506 km, set in August last year. and shared on Instagram that he began with 3:55-3:58/km pace, and carried on to finish the race with a 5:05-5:10/km pace.

Sorokin added: “I’m very tired, however I’m double excited” before thanking his supporters.

Sorokin has worked his way to the top of the international 24-hour game over the last seven years with his fast-starting style and never-say-die attitude. In recent years his work has clearly started to pay off with record after record being broken.

In 2019, Sorokin had his breakout performance when he ran 278.972 km at Albi, France to take the world championship.
