The United Nations has designated 28-year-old Nigerian poet, Ms Maryam Bukar Hassan, as its first Global Advocate for Peace.

Bukar, popularly known as “Alhanislam,” is a spoken word artist and peace advocate from Biu in Borno State. In her new role, she will use the power of poetry and performance to promote gender equality, youth empowerment, and inclusive peacebuilding.

She has performed on several prestigious global platforms, including the UN SDG Awards, TED Talks, and the World Bank Youth Summit. She also partnered with the UN on initiatives such as the Peace Begins With Me poetry video for the International Day of Peace, and delivered a moving performance at the 2024 Summit of the Future.

Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, affirmed the value of her designation.

“The dedication of the Global Advocate’s time and energy to this effort will greatly increase awareness of the peace and security priorities of the United Nations, particularly the vital role of women and youth in advancing inclusive and sustainable peace.”

Similarly, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, welcomed Bukar’s appointment.

“Art has the power to move hearts, inspire action, and bring communities together. Through her compelling words and performances, Ms Bukar has shown how creativity can be a force for peacebuilding, dialogue and inclusion. Her voice will be an important partner in amplifying the UN’s efforts to advance political solutions, empower young people and women, and sustain peace.”

As the first Global Advocate for the entire Peace and Security Pillar, Bukar is expected to contribute to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agendas through storytelling, digital engagement, and public speaking.

She will also participate in major UN events and campaigns, including a performance at New York City’s Summer Stage festival today, Sunday, 27 July 2025, alongside renowned artistes Femi Kuti, Elida Almeida, and others.

UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J Mohammed, in a message posted on X, celebrated Bukar’s appointment

“Your voice carries truth and endless inspiration. As you once said: ‘Peace has always known a woman’s name spoken in the way she chooses courage over collapse, again and again.’ Proud to see a Nigerian woman lighting the path of peace.”

Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, also congratulated Bukar, describing the honour as a testament to her exceptional use of art, poetry, and advocacy for peace, justice, and transformation.

“The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development celebrates Bukar as she carries this global mantle. Her recognition is a proud moment for Nigeria and a beacon of pride for young women everywhere. As she advocates the cause of women through #WomenPeaceSecurity and #YouthPeaceSecurity agendas, her voice will continue to inspire hope — not only for Nigeria, but for the world,” the Minister said.

Maryam Bukar Hassan’s artistic dedication has previously earned her accolades such as the Sustainable Africa Award at COP28 and finalist honours at the 2024 UN SDG Creativity Award.
