UN Chief Criticizes Tech Firms for Profiting from ‘Toxic Content’
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned tech firms for profiting from ‘toxic content,’ urging them to take responsibility.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Guterres emphasized the urgent need for tech companies to cease profiting from the dissemination of harmful content, including antisemitism, racism, and anti-Muslim bigotry.
“We are witnessing an intolerable explosion of anti-Semitism and other forms of religious and racial hatred,” Guterres stated, highlighting the detrimental impact of divisive narratives on societal cohesion and democratic values.
Expressing concern over the role of social media platforms in exacerbating societal divisions, Guterres called for regulatory measures to enhance transparency and curb the spread of toxic content.

“Divided societies are weak societies where extremist narratives can take hold and tensions quickly escalate into violence, undermining democratic values,” he said.
While social media companies claim to have implemented measures to combat harmful content, Guterres emphasized the ongoing need for decisive action in light of recent global conflicts, such as the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Guterres’ remarks underscore the growing recognition of the responsibility of tech companies to address societal challenges exacerbated by online platforms.
