The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Hajiya Amina Mohammed, has applauded the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his bold and inclusive policies geared towards advancing social development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Hajiya Amina, who was in Kano to pay condolence visits following the passing of elder statesman Aminu Alhassan Dantata and former President Muhammadu Buhari, used the occasion to acknowledge several key initiatives under Governor Yusuf’s administration.
She highlighted the solar-powered street lighting project across the state, the establishment of the Kano Centre for Disease Control the first of its kind by any sub-national government in Nigeria and efforts to expand healthcare access through the state insurance scheme targeting the informal sector.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General also commended the creation of a dedicated Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, along with the restructuring of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, as clear indicators of Kano’s forward-looking climate and energy agenda.
Beyond condolences, Amina Mohammed said her visit was part of ongoing advocacy for deeper SDG implementation and to reinforce cooperation between the UN and Kano State.
She informed the governor about the forthcoming UN Business and Investment Forum and lauded Kano’s progress in empowering women, creating jobs, and promoting environmental sustainability.
“Kano is like a country on its own, and it should be treated as such in terms of international development support,” she stated.
Responding, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed Kano’s willingness to deepen collaboration with the United Nations and its agencies, especially in the areas of healthcare, education, climate resilience, renewable energy, and sustainable investments.
He reaffirmed his government’s resolve to implement transformative policies that enhance the well-being of citizens while contributing to national and global development goals.
