UNHCR Donates Respiratory Machines to Cross River Government

The Government of Cross River State in southern Nigeria has appreciated the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) for the donation of respiratory support equipment.

The deputy governor of the state, Mr. Peter Odey, who spoke on behalf of the government in Calabar, the state capital, said the gesture would enhance qualitative service delivery in the healthcare sector.

According to a statement signed by the Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Mr. Fred Abua, the donations were presented to the government by the Head of Field Office, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Calabar, Mr. Mohammed Nafion and his team.

The statement indicated that the deputy governor assured of the government’s efforts to provide the people, especially those in hard-to-reach communities, with quality and affordable healthcare services.

It further indicated, “The deputy governor, Mr. Peter Odey lauded UNHCR Calabar Field Office for all their contributions to healthcare in the state.”

He assured the organization that the Sen. Prince Bassey Otu’s administration will continue to create an enabling environment for them to thrive in the state.

The statement also indicated that, “The Head of the Field Office, Mr. Nafion said that the aim of their visit was to thank the government of Cross River State for their support.

“We are also here for the ceremonial flag off and distribution of oxygen concentration machines in the state for those suffering from breathing difficulties.”

The Press Secretary stated that the Protection Associate, UNHCR Calabar, Mr. Richard Effiong said that besides working with refugees, the organisation has renovated health centers and was building a guest house to serve as accommodation for nurses, who work in remote areas such as Oban and Ekpong Anaku in Akamkpa Local Government Area.

The statement stated that the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk, expressed satisfaction with the model and quality of healthcare provided by UNHCR, having visited primary health care centers across the state.

He gave assurance that the oxygen concentration machines donated would be promptly distributed to health centres in the villages for use.

The UNHCR officials were accompanied by the Technical Officer, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Dr. Enoch Asuquo and Protection Officer, Caritas Nigeria, Calabar office, Mr. Raleigh Williams.
