The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), says it is saddened by the death of at least 11 new-born babies following a fire incident at a hospital in Tivaouane, Senegal

UNICEF Representative in Senegal, Ms. Silvia Danailov, disclosed this in a statement, “UNICEF is deeply saddened by the death of at least 11 new-born babies following a terrible fire at the neonatal unit of the hospital of Tivaouane.

“We express our deepest sympathy to the families and communities affected by this tragedy, especially those who have lost their children. No parent should experience the heartbreak of watching their child die.

“UNICEF stands alongside the authorities and partners on the ground to provide support and the necessary assistance to these families and prevent further tragedies,” the statement said.

Initial reports suggest the fire was caused by a short circuit and then spread quickly.

Three babies were saved, while families rushed to the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital to find out if their babies had survived.

Some were overcome with grief when they heard the news.
