UNICEF urges Kano State Assembly to pass Child Rights Law

The United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF has urged Kano Assembly to pass the Child Protection Bill in Kano state, northern Nigeria.

The UNICEF Chief of Kano field office, Rahama Farah stated this, during football tournament organized between selected Kano school children and Kannywood team to commemorate children’s day with theme “Discrimination, Exclusion and Inequality,” as part of the effort in commemoration of the world children’s day celebration.

Mr Farah disclosed that in some parts of Northern Nigeria, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States, many children are lack behind, out of school have rights to access education, nutrition, birth certificates, and are denied their basic rights.

He called on the Kano State government, and members of the state house of assembly to endorse the child protection bill, which he believes would go a long way in protecting children against all forms of oppression.

UNICEF chief also urged the community leaders, policymakers and all relevant stakeholders, to collaborate and work together to protect children’s rights.

“I will take this opportunity, to call on the Kano State government and the members of the house of assembly to pass the law that protects children. We have a pending bill that needs to be passed into law in Kano State. We encourage the parliamentarian to facilitate the passage of the bill into law because we believe it will guarantee the protection of the rights of children in Kano state,” Farah stressed.

For his part, the Director of planning, Qur’ani and Ismiyya school of the management board, Muhammed Ibn Alhassan, said it is a great achievement to collaborate with UNICEF, adding that the event would develop the children physically, emotionally and intellectually.

Also speaking at the event, celebrated Kannywood actor, Ali Nuhu said passing the child protection bill will go a long way in protecting the rights of children who are leaders of tomorrow.

The mini-football tournament ended 4-2, the winners in place of the Kannywood team got the trophy while all the participants received medals.
