The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Special Delegates Conference sitting in Kano state north Western Nigeria, has expunged the National Orientation Agency, NOA, non- practicing Information officers, and local government Public relations officers from the union.
The special delegate session being held at the Efficient event centre in Kano presided over by the national president of the union, Chris Isiguzo decided during the NUJ constitution review session.
“The delegates in the session gave the nod that NOA staff would no longer be accorded NUJ membership.
However, NOA elected officials would be allowed to serve out their term of office,” he said.
The delegates also passed the new law barring members of staff of ministries of information adjudged as non-practicing journalists henceforth from being accorded NUJ membership.
“Local Government public relations officers should no longer be handed NUJ membership status,” he said.
A new law was also passed for the NUJ to henceforth supervise the activities of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN.
The national president of the union, Chris Isiguzo, while amending article 9 of the NUJ constitution resolved for inclusion a new clause that states that any SWAN election not supervised by NUJ henceforth is null and void.
A new clause equally inserted in the amendment states that the national president of SWAN should now be addressed as “national chairman.”
However, there was an objection to the proposed draft law that SWAN should now occupy the status of the beat association.
