The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has praised the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, for his significant contributions to infrastructural development within the FCT.

In a statement following its inaugural Congress under the new leadership, held at the Council’s Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, the union also urged the minister and relevant authorities to implement comprehensive economic reforms to improve the living standards of residents in the territory.

The Congress, chaired by the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council,Comrade Grace Ike, served as a platform to address key issues impacting both the union and the nation. Over 400 members attended, including former Council Chairmen and past leaders of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).

In her opening remarks, Comrade Ike reaffirmed the executive’s commitment to fostering unity and progress within the union. “This historic Congress marks more than just a formal gathering; it’s an opportunity to reaffirm our collective commitment to unity, progress, and the overall betterment of our profession,” she said.

The Congress raised several critical concerns, including the rising cost of living, which it described as a growing burden on Nigerians. The Council called on the Federal Government to introduce immediate measures to ease the strain caused by escalating prices of essential goods and services.

Participants also voiced strong concerns over inconsistent electricity and water supply within the FCT, noting how disruptions were driving up operational costs for businesses and affecting the daily lives of residents. “Frequent disruptions in power and water supply are increasing operational expenses and diminishing business profitability, adding more pressure on the average Nigerian,” the communiqué stated.

The Council urged relevant agencies to prioritize restoring these vital services to improve the quality of life in the region.

The NUJ FCT Council also expressed alarm over the rising insecurity and criminal activities, linking them to the economic downturn. The union stressed the importance of collaboration between stakeholders to address these issues and restore public trust.

While commending the FCT Minister for his efforts in infrastructure development, the Congress called for continued efforts to modernize and expand essential infrastructure across the territory.

The Congress concluded with a commitment from the NUJ FCT Council leadership to prioritise the welfare of its members and work towards the union’s collective advancement.

Comrade Ike reiterated the Council’s focus on fostering unity and addressing issues that affect journalists and the broader community.

The event marked a significant milestone in the Council’s history and set the stage for ongoing engagement and advocacy on behalf of both its members and the public. Ademola Adepoju
