University Don Urges Government to Prioritise Skills and Entrepreneurship-Based Education

A Senior Lecturer in the Department of English and Literary Studies at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Dr. Salisu Raj, has called on the federal government to place greater emphasis on skills and entrepreneurship-driven curricula to equip students for self-reliance.

Dr. Raj made this appeal during a one-day workshop focused on fostering entrepreneurial values among students, organised by the leadership of the Association of Students of English and Literary Studies at the university.

He stressed that a curriculum that prioritises skills development across all fields of study would not only create job opportunities but also help curb idleness among young people.

Dr. Vincent Paul from the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, in a paper presentation, highlighted the importance of students diversifying their skill sets and leveraging information and communication technology to improve their economic prospects.

He further called on the government to provide grants for unemployed youths seeking to pursue entrepreneurship in fields such as agriculture, commerce, and technology.

President of the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies, Miss Faridah Salawudeen, emphasised the need for youth engagement in national development, stating that proactive youth programs would prevent them from falling into negative influences, especially during election cycles.

The workshop, themed “Building Entrepreneurial Value as a Viable Path Toward Achieving Self-Reliance After Graduation,” aimed to inspire students to adopt self-sustaining skills for a prosperous future.
