Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), also known as UNIZIK, located in Awka, Anambra State, is poised to host its 19th convocation ceremony, commencing on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
The event will honor 8,157 students graduating in various disciplines, alongside conferring honorary degrees on distinguished individuals for their contributions to society.
During a press briefing held at the university’s conference hall, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, announced that the convocation will feature a lecture by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume. Notable personalities to receive honorary doctoral degrees include Prof. Ali Muhammed Pate, Nigeria’s Minister of Health; Oluwaseyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; and Chief Chika Emenike, a respected industrialist. Each honoree has been recognised for their significant contributions and impact on both the university community and society at large.
The graduating class includes 6,126 first-degree recipients, 463 PhD candidates, and 16 from the UNIZIK Business School, alongside holders of postgraduate diplomas in education and other fields. Professor Ikechebelu emphasised the university’s commitment to academic and infrastructural excellence, citing the initiatives under the “BLESSED UNIZIK” mantra aimed at fostering a conducive learning environment and restoring stability after recent leadership challenges.
“We have made significant progress in improving our academic, administrative, and infrastructural landscapes,” he stated. “Key achievements include a steady electricity supply and ongoing beautification projects on campus, which enhance the overall learning experience.”
Additionally, the Acting Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the timely support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Education, Mr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, in helping UNIZIK regain its footing during a difficult period.
“As part of the celebration, the university will also commission several completed projects, including new office blocks and hostels, further demonstrating a commitment to student welfare and academic excellence.
“With preparations underway, the university assures graduates and attendees that comprehensive security measures will be in place throughout the convocation events.
“UNIZIK’s ongoing transformation and commitment to excellence reflect its crucial role in fostering the leaders of tomorrow, ready to contribute to societal development across various fields.
“This convocation is not just a celebration of academic achievement; it symbolises our collective resilience and determination as a university community.
We look forward to grand ceremonies that recognize the efforts of our graduates and the contributions of our honored guests,” he concluded.
