The United Nations Organisation for Coordination of Humanitarian Activities, UNOCHA says Humanitarian response requires a whole lot of global partnership including security.
UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr Martins Griffiths stated this in Abuja, Nigeria, when he paid a work visit to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq. Pictures below:
” We are pleased to be part of you in making efforts in meeting the needs of the people, many of whom I met in Maiduguri, Borno State.
” This is not a short term engagement, it is a medium to long term engagement the end of which we will see as we saw yesterday, the successful return of people to their homes, dignity, respect and prosperity”. ” I’m convinced that the approach we saw outlined both in the field and in the meeting with the Governor is very effective, innovative and responsive to needs“.
According to the Under Secretary-General, there’s a need for the world to know and continue to remember the appalling tragedy that befell the POCs many years ago and to hear their stories again.
” The consciousness that the world needs to remember and never forget what happened, to stand by your side as you and your fellow Ministers address what happened to these women and their families”. He said
Responding, the Minister said Government is committed more than before to ensure the safe and dignified return of people to their homes.
” We have agencies that are saddled with that responsibility which my Ministry is coordinating. And I’m sure that you are aware that this Ministry came on board to specifically address these issues.
” We have the North-east Development Commission which was created to rebuild the North-east, especially Borno State”.
Earlier, the Under Secretary-General and his team were in Maiduguri, Borno State to assess the extent of the tragedy.
