The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), in collaboration with the Japanese government, has commenced the installation of flood detention devices in flood-prone areas of Anambra State.

The initiative is spearheaded by UNOPS representatives Megumi Otsu, Herbert R. Appiah, and a team of field engineers.

Receiving the UNOPS team at his office in the state secretariat, Anambra State Commissioner for Environment Dr. Felix Odimegwu emphasized the Soludo administration’s commitment to environmental protection.

He noted that the government has implemented measures to address the persistent flooding challenges facing the region.

Dr. Odimegwu highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts, which include continuous drainage desilting and the enactment of legislation aimed at mitigating both natural and man-made causes of flooding.

He explained that effectively managing flooding will also lead to a reduction in soil erosion across the state.

In discussions with the UNOPS team, Dr. Odimegwu called for both national and international support, citing the escalating impact of flooding on both existing and new erosion sites within Anambra.

He advocated for the construction of dams by international organizations as a long-term solution to the flooding crisis.

UNOPS team lead Megumi Otsu expressed the group’s commitment to combatting the serious flooding issues faced by the state. She announced that the installation of flood detection devices will commence at the Onitsha River Port (NIWA) and the Ogbaru local government council, with plans to extend efforts to other flood-prone areas in Anambra.
