Nigerians must take urgent action to manage waste, especially plastic more sustainably.
The improper disposal of these plastic waste contributes to environmental degradation.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Environment Dr Iziaq Salako stated this at the  Environmental Protection Agency’s “OSEPA” 2024 Summit  held in Ondo State southwest Nigeria with the theme “Please Sort  Your Solid Waste To Ease Recycling “
Dr Salako noted that sorting plastic waste from other solid wastes to ease recycling is a significant steps toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
“Sorting plastic waste at the source is a simple but effective way to reduce contamination in the recycling stream and ensure that more materials are successfully repurposed. I urge everyone here today to make this commitment and encourage others to do the same. “

“It also reduces the costs associated with sorting waste at facilities, allowing resources to be allocated more effectively to the recycling process. By sorting out your waste, you contribute directly to a cleaner environment. This small action helps divert plastic waste from landfills, oceans, and streets, thereby reducing pollution and protecting biodiversity. ” Dr Salako stated.
He says Nigeria, as a responsible member of the global community is concerned about the increasing amount of plastic waste in its environment.

“This summit is a fantastic opportunity to explore how we can better educate and engage communities in waste sorting practices.”

“I call on governments at all levels, businesses, civil society and non governmental organizations to work together to provide clear, consistent information on how and why sorting matters. Returning reusable or recyclable “Waste” (use) materials must become and obligatory social responsibility of all citizen of our country in order to optimise the circular management of waste.”  He said.
The Minister also advised the Ondo State Government and other sub-nationals to adopt a similar policy like that of the Federal government to ban the use of single use plastics in all the government entities.

“We live at a time where vast amounts of plastic waste generated is increasing at an unprecedented rate. Our changing consumption patterns, coupled with the rise of single-use plastics, packaging materials, and electronics is making the generation of plastic waste to grow exponentially creating a daunting challenge for our society.”
“Dumpsites are overflowing, and plastic waste is ending up in the rivers and oceans; choking marine wildlife, damage the soil, poisoning ground water and resulting in serious adverse effects on human health.” Dr Salako stated.
He also called on industries and businesses to invest in recycling technologies to help  promote environmental education among consumers.
The Minister also pointed out that  President Bola  Tinubu, has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action through his priority agendas.
“I am happy to note that His Excellency, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is following on this climate action and environmental advocacy pathway of the President. My presence here today your Excellency is to demonstrate that the Federal Government particularly the Federal Ministry of Environment recognises you as an environment friendly governor and appreciates you for your climate actions.” He explained.
According to him, “our country, 15% of the solid waste generated translating to almost 5 million tonnes per annum is plastic. Less than 10% of this plastic waste is managed properly with the remaining over 90% littering our streets, blocking our drains, finding their way into the oceans and earning Nigeria the unenviable record of the tenth largest producer of unmanaged plastic in the world.”
The Minister, commended the Ondo State Governor’s commitment to environmental health and conservation through the one tree one house initiative.
“The provision of renewable energy like solar lighting across the 3 senatorial districts of the state is a testament to your environmental sustainability consciousness and a demonstration of your commitment to the global agenda to triple renewable power by 2030. “

“Congratulations Mr. Governor for your landmark achievements. Like they say, one good turn deserves another and I am confident that Ondo State people will be rewarding you with their votes come November 16th” He explained.
The event which is the third in the series to combatting the menace of plastic pollution in Ondo State focusing this year on “Sorting Plastic Waste from other Solid Wastes to Ease Recycling”, reflects a critical responsibility we all share in managing our waste more effectively.
The event is crucial in promoting a sustainable environment and enhancing  quality of life in Ondo State in southwest Nigeria.
