An American citizen, Robert Vieira, was released from detention in Tunisia on Sunday, U.S. Special Envoy Adam Boehler announced.
Vieira had been held for 13 months while engaged in missionary work and was suspected by Tunisian authorities of espionage, Boehler told newsman.
“We appreciate the government of Tunisia’s decision to resolve this case and allow Mr. Vieira to reunite with his family after more than 13 months of pre-trial detention,” Boehler said in a statement.
Boehler added that he worked closely with Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti to secure Vieira’s release.
