US Releases AI Chip Export Rules To China

The US government has released revised rules to prevent China’s access to U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) chips and chipmaking tools. This move aims to hinder Beijing’s chipmaking industry due to national security concerns.

The rules released in October aim to stop the export of advanced AI chips from companies like Nvidia to China.

This move by Washington intensifies scrutiny amid fears that China’s technological progress could enhance its military capabilities.

The 166-page rules specify that chip shipment restrictions to China also apply to laptops with those chips, effective from April 4.

US officials are compiling a list of prohibited Chinese chip factories for American technology, easing sanctions compliance.

The list may be released in the coming months, according to Reuters sources.

In 2022, Washington restricted US chip equipment makers from supplying key tools to Chinese factories producing advanced chips, but companies faced challenges identifying these fabs.
