Van Niekerk wins again ahead of African Champs

World champion Wayde van Niekerk led a trio of South Africa’s fastest athletes at the inaugural Adidas Boost Games in Boston at the weekend, as they geared up to represent their country as part of a large 96-member team at the CAA 20th African Senior Championships in Durban on 22-26 June.

Van Niekerk remained unbeaten this season, storming to another victory in the Men’s 400m race on Friday’s opening day of competition.

He clocked 44.28, crossing the line 0.17 outside his Season’s Best set in Bloemfontein in April, and more than half a second ahead of world junior champion Machel Cedenio of Trinidad and Tobago, who finished second in 44.87.

Meanwhile, World Student Games gold medallist Justine Palframan took sixth position in the Women’s 400m contest in 53.17, bettering her season’s best by more than two seconds.

Former world indoor champion Francena McCorory of the United States charged to a convincing victory in 50.46.

South Africa’s national record holder Akani Simbine ended fourth in the Men’s 100m street race, which was held on a temporary Mondo track, clocking 10.32 on Saturday night.

He was just 0.09 behind American Marvin Bracy, who won in 10.23.

The African Championships will be held at Kings Park Athletics Stadium.
