Vice-Chancellor Urges New Students to Prioritise Academic Pursuit
By Olubunmi Osoteku, Ibadan
The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode Adebowale, has charged new students of the University to prioritise their academic pursuits and see other pursuits as additional benefits, while not taking God out of the equation of their lives.
Prof. Adebowale gave the charge, on Monday, at a reception held for the new students by the Chapel of the Ressurection, UI, after the orientation service for new students held at the Chapel.
He counselled the students to see their admission as a privilege, choose their friends carefully, and follow the rules and regulations of the university, adding that the fear of the Students Disciplinary Committee is the beginning of wisdom.
The VC advised the students to allow the university pass through them by joining beneficial groups and taking advantage of the Peer Assisted study group that had been instituted to assist new students in passing identified difficult courses, while wishing them all the best and a fulfilling stay on the UI campus.
Earlier, the Registrar, Mr. Ganiyu Saliu, pointed out how fortunate the students were to have been offered admissions into UI, disclosing that over 20,000 candidates sat for the University’s Post UTME, but only 4,200 were offered admissions, out of which 3,983 accepted the offers of admission.
Saliu advised the new students to work hard in order to be found worthy in character and learning at the end of their various programmes, advising them to attend the compulsory orientation programme that would hold later in the week and to always seek guidance from appropriate channels.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Chapel Committee, Professor E. Ogunkola, told the students that their attitude would determine their altitude and urged them to see their freedom from home as the freedom to do things right, charging the new students to take control of their future and do the right thing.
In his sermon, the Chaplain of the Chapel of the Ressurection, Venerable Dr V. Oladele, who spoke on the theme “Christian Service”, appealed to the new students to beware of pastors who preach “hyper grace,” and claim that grace covers all sins, saying Christians should render service to God in a godly and holy manner, as a service not rendered according to the will of God is not acceptable to God.
He urged the new students to buckle up and do well in their studies, not to overstep their bounds, and obey the rules and regulations of the University so that they would make their parents, the Chapel and the University very proud.
The 2022/23 Session Orientation Programme would continue with orientation interaction and lectures on Wednesday, 30 and Thursday, 31 August, 2023, while a Jumaat Service would hold on Friday, 01 September, 2023 at the Central Mosque, University of Ibadan.
