The #EndMisogynyNG Project’s focal lead, Mrs Ugonma Cokey, stated on Friday that research had demonstrated that violence against women occurred not just in physical settings but also online, through cyberbullying and harassment.

This was revealed during an information-sharing and capacity-building session in Lagos, as part of the project implemented by Journalists For Christ (JFC) International Outreach in collaboration with the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC).

The initiative, themed “Countering Misogyny and Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV) through Monitoring, Digital Counter Narratives, and Advocacy Action,” is based on data from eight Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving around 100 participants.

These included female journalists, students, professionals, people living with HIV/AIDS, social media enthusiasts, and men.

Findings from the FGDs indicated that sex-based narratives against women persist online, with defamation and unauthorised sharing of images and videos being prevalent.

Women in leadership positions and those living with disabilities often face harassment and unsolicited advances.

To combat this, Mrs Cokey recommends increasing awareness, promoting digital literacy, and involving men in preventing misogyny.

Project Officer Ms Blessing Oladunjoye highlighted alarming rates of online misogyny, with 66 instances of cyberbullying, harassment, and misogynistic content identified from over 500 social media posts.

She stressed the severe consequences, including depression and suicidal thoughts.

Gender Advocacy Expert Funmi Falobi called for awareness campaigns and responsible social media practices.

Project Coordinator Mr Lekan Otufodunrin urged journalists to promote peace and tenderness in their reporting.

The #EndMisogynyNG Project aims to create and disseminate digital counternarratives to address misogyny and interfaith violence through strategic reliance, visibility, and advocacy.
