Vodafone Conducts First Satellite Video Call Using Standard Smartphone
Vodafone has achieved a significant milestone by conducting the world’s first satellite-enabled video call using a standard 4G/5G smartphone.
This groundbreaking call was made from a remote mountainous area in Wales, a location previously without mobile broadband coverage. The call connected Vodafone engineer Rowan Chesmer with Vodafone Group CEO Margherita Della Valle.
This achievement was made possible through Vodafone’s collaboration with AST SpaceMobile, utilising their BlueBird satellites in low-Earth orbit. These satellites relay signals from space to Vodafone’s newly established space-to-land gateway, enabling standard smartphones to access satellite connectivity without the need for specialised equipment.

The successful video call demonstrates the potential for universal digital connectivity, aiming to bridge mobile coverage gaps and provide broadband services to previously unreachable areas. This technology allows multiple users in areas without mobile coverage to make and receive video calls, access the internet, and use online messaging services, all through their regular smartphones.
Vodafone’s partnership with AST SpaceMobile is part of a broader strategy to enhance mobile connectivity globally. The two companies have signed a long-term commercial contract extending through 2034, aiming to offer space-based cellular broadband connectivity across Europe and Africa.
This development marks a significant step toward closing mobile coverage gaps and ensuring that even the most remote locations can access reliable communication services.
