Voice of Nigeria (VON) has emerged as the winner of the Radio category in the maiden edition of the ReportHer award.
Funke Fayemi of the Programmes Directorate, VON, bagged the award at the event which took place at Radisson Blu, Ikeja in Lagos state.
Winners of other categories were Tech Cabal which won the Digital Category; The Print category was won by Leadership Newspapers and Arise News won the Television category.
Titilope Falope of Premium Times emerged Reporther Journalist of the year having covered and reported women’s stories fairly.
In her welcome remarks, Toun Okewale Sonaiya, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Women FM 91.7, warmly welcomed guests and participants to the event.
“Tonight is an evening of thanksgiving. I thank the Nigeria Media for their deliberate and intentional commitment towards women reportage.
“We are grateful to Journalists and media professionals for their works demanding accountability towards making Nigeria a gender sensitive country.
“The Reporther Awards seeks to Honor Nigerian journalists that have deliberately reported women with the aim to change the narrative.”
The event, a brainchild of Women FM 91.7 partnered with the United Nations (UN) Women, Government of Canada as well as the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigate Journalism.
Mrs. Beatrice Eyong, United Nations (UN) Women County Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, appreciated media organisations for advancing the rights of women and girls in Nigeria.
“The UN is part of this initiative because we have about 50% of women who are not able to fully participate and achieve the Sustainable Development set goals.
“It is very important to promote women equality and gender empowerment, while abolishing harmful cultural practices. She added that it would take another 132 years to promote gender equality if not attended to now”.
Speaking further, the UN County Representative commended Women FM for the roles it played during the just concluded 2023 general elections in Nigeria, as women aspirants and candidates were well projected and promoted.
“We may not have had enough representation but we do hope that women will be well represented in the new government of Nigeria.”
