A former Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai (rtd), has congratulated ECOWAS and participants at the VON Forum 2026, while urging renewed efforts to address the withdrawal of some Sahelian states from the regional bloc.

Buratai described the development as a significant challenge to regional unity, emphasising that ECOWAS, in collaboration with the African Union, should intensify diplomatic engagement to reintegrate the affected countries.

He noted that full African integration and collective security cannot be achieved while some member states remain outside ECOWAS, stressing that “unity is essential for regional stability and development.”

Buratai commended ongoing diplomatic initiatives and expressed optimism that “continued engagement would yield positive outcomes for the reintegration of the concerned states.”

Also a former Governor of Niger State, Sani Bello said Nigeria has consistently championed good governance and collective security across West Africa.

Speaking at the forum, he highlighted Nigeria’s contributions through conflict management, electoral support, and institutional strengthening, which have helped build a more stable and democratic ECOWAS community.

Bello noted that the milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on past achievements and renew commitment to shared ideals.

He stressed that evolving challenges require adaptive strategies grounded in collaboration, inclusivity, and respect for the rule of law.

The former Governor also commended Voice of Nigeria for amplifying regional cooperation and promoting shared values, calling for continued unity in advancing democratic stability for future generations.

In his word, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa urged Nigerians to unite in building and strengthening the country, emphasising the media’s role as a key partner in this effort through responsible reporting.

Addressing participants at VON’s forum 2026, Bawa stressed that collaboration between institutions and the media is vital in the fight against financial and economic crimes.

He further highlighted the Commission’s ongoing efforts to expose and prosecute corruption, noting that public communication and strategic engagement remain central to sustaining public trust and strengthening governance outcomes.
