The Director-General, Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu has pledged that the corporation would continue to promote the nation’s documentary heritage,
He made the promise when members of the National Committee on the UNESCO Memory of the World visited his office to seek cooperation for the promotion and preservation of Nigeria’s documentary heritage.
Mr Okechukwu said, “Documenting heritage is key to people’s values.”
The Director of Training, Voice of Nigeria Mr Ben Shemang informed the visiting team of the various responsibilities of VON among which is the documentation of Nigeria’s history, culture and traditions in digital form.
He promised that VON would work together with the National Committee on the UNESCO Memory of the World to achieve its objectives.
Mr Shemang said, “You are at the right place for corporations to preserve and document things and prevent them from extinction.”
The leader of the National Committee on the UNESCO Memory of the World, Mrs Evelyn Odigboh told the management of VON that, “The creation of a national committee will help the country to develop a strategy and plan for the identification, preservation and accessibility of its documentary heritage.”
She identified VON as a strategic partner in achieving the goals of the UNESCO committee.
Odigboh noted that, the newly established committee will coordinate, promote and advocate for the identification, preservation, public accessibility and possible inscription of Nigeria’s documentary heritage elements on national, regional and international registers for the Memory of the World.
Meanwhile, the management of VON has also received the Leadership of the Department of Mass Communications Nassarawa State University who came to seek for collaboration and publicity in the forth coming book presentation in honour of veteran broadcaster and former Director General of the Nigerian Television Authority NTA, Mr. Tony Iredia.
