Voting Commences In Kano State With Large Women Turnout

Electoral activities have commenced in a peaceful mood with early large turnout of voters, especially women in polling stations visited in Kano state north Western as residents obey restriction of movements of 12am to 6pm local time.

Observation in the early hours through densely populated Kumbotso, Tarauni, Nassarawa, Gwale, Ungogo , Dawakin Tofa and Fagge local government areas show large numbers of voters especially women, some straddling babies at their back, who arrived as early as 6.30am for an election scheduled to comemence 8am local time.

At Mariri LGA Primary school,, Asamau Sani,a mother of 5 months old baby said “there’s was the need for them as women to come out early finish voting and go back home to attend to other domestic chores,”

Women have over 2.6 million share of the voting population in Kano representing 44.4 percent of the over 5.9 total voters in the state.

Voting was observed to have also commenced as early as 8am local time.

At Tumfafi Centeral Primary School in Dwakin Tofa LGA, the presiding officer of Kanawa 1 polling unit Abdulahi Mohammed said the election is going on smoothly , especially with the use of the BVAS.

“It has being going on smoothly, the thumb printing is slow but the picturing is faster but everything is going on fine. No hitches so far,” he said.

A voter, Mohammed Idris said he went through the process without problem, stressing that “the process is faster than other previous elections”

Joint security operatives with the presence of the military, police and others on patrol with some at checking points was noticed.

As the second biggest commercial city in Nigeria, the ever busy Streets of Kano are empty of vehicular movements and humans as shops are also closed.

However children were seen having there field day playing football on the streets.
