VP Osinbajo condemns killing of Student in Sokoto State

Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has reacted to the mob lynching of a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State, describing the incident as deeply disturbing.

Deborah Samuel, a student of the institution was killed by a mob on Thursday for an alleged blasphemy.

Professor Osinbajo spoke and condemned the incident at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Friday.

He said; “First, let me say that the president has reacted through that statement issued earlier condemning the action.

“But I must say that it is deeply distressing thing, very disturbing that such an atrocious killing of a young lady by a mob who took the law into their own hands. I think it is very unfortunate indeed.”

The Vice President commended the swift reaction of the Sokoto State government and the Sultan of Sokoto, saying it demonstrated the outrage of Nigerians to the mob action.

Professor Osinbajo said; “I think their swift reaction to the situation clearly demonstrated the outrage of millions of Nigerians and also demonstrated our desire, the desire of everyone, to ensure that the perpetrators are quickly apprehended and prosecuted.

“As the president said, there is really no excuse for anyone to take the law into their own hands no matter the provocation. There are set processes for ensuring that we are able to redress whatever wrong that is done against us.”

Ptofessor Osinbajo condoled with the family of the late Deborah Samuel and prayed God to comfort them.

He said; “I think we must express our condolence to the family of the young lady, Deborah Samuel. I can’t imagine how hard her parents, siblings and members of her family feel, not just about her death, but also the very horrendous nature of its occurrence.

“I think it is very sad indeed and we express our sincere condolences to them. Our hearts are with them. We ask that the Almighty God will comfort them at this time.”
