The first meeting of Nigeria’s National Economic Council, NEC, under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, began on Thursday at the Presidential Villa with Vice President Kashim Shettima presiding.
The meeting of the Council commenced after its inauguration by President Tinubu.
The NEC is chaired by the Vice President and has Governors of 36 States, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other officials of the Nigerian government as members.
The new governors elected on March 18 and inaugurated on May 29 this year are attending the meeting for the first time.
They will join Governors Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Charles Soludo of Anambra State, Duoyo Diri of Bayelsa State, Abdullahi Sule of Nassarawa State and Godwin Obaseki of Edo State as members of the Council.
Other Governors who have been members of the Council before this administration are Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State; Seyi Makinde of Oyo; Yahaya Bello, Kogi State; Biodun Oyebanji, Ekiti; AbdulRahman Abdurazaq, Kwara; Babagana Zulum; Borno, Mai Buni, Yobe; Inuwa Yahaya, Gombe; Rotimi Akeredolu, Ondo; and Umar Finitri, Adamawa.
The National Economic Council is established by Section 153 (1) and Paragraphs 18 and 19 of Part 1 of the Third Schedule of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, as amended.
The Council meets every month and advises the President on economic matters.
