The Nigerian government has been urged to begin the implementation of the thirty kilometers per hour rule in the country.
The World Health Organization Country Representative in Nigeria, Dr Walter Mulombo, made the call at the United Nations Global Road Safety week, holding in Abuja.
He said that a lot of human resources are lost to road accidents especially in Africa, hence the need find a lasting solution to the problem.
‘ This day is held to bring individuals, governments, non- governments and others around the world to create awareness on road safety to reduce the rate of casualties and death from road traffic crashes“.Dr Molumbo said.
On his part, the Deputy Corp Marshal of the of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Hygenus Fuomsuk who represented Corp Marshal Boboye Oyeyemi, said that the 6th United Nations Global Road Safety week with the theme ‘ Managing speed- street for life’, also calls for 30km/hr speed limits to be acceptable speed for vehicles in built up areas.
Mr, Oyeyemi reiterated that all hands must be on desk to increase action towards the actualisation of basic principles to the road safety management.
He said ‘ I encourage and admonish all motorists to be conscious of the fact that every movement of all categories of roads have their own specific limits, which must be observed’.
The Global Road Safety week is held annually to sensitize motorists on the need to adhere to road safety rules in a bid to reduce accidents on the road.
