WAFCON 2022: Super Falcons defeat Botswana 2 – 0
Nigeria returned to winning ways after defeating Botswana 2-0 in the second Group C game of the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) played at the Prince Moulay Al-Hassan Stadium in Morocco on Thursday night.
The two goals were scored by Ifeoma Onumonu and Ucheibe Christy respectively.
The defending champions lost their opening group game 1-2 to South Africa on Monday and desperately needed a win against The Mares to progress to the next stage of the competition.
As expected, the Super Falcons dominated the early exchanges but were unable to break down the resolute Botswana defence.
Ifeoma Onumonu opened the scoring for the Nigerian side in the 21st minute after she was put through on goal to make it 1-0 to the West Africans.
Nigeria doubled their advantage in the 48th minute through Christy Ucheibe who connected with an early second-half corner kick and put the ball beyond Maitumelo Boseja in Bostwanas’ goal.
The Super Falcons will next face Burundi on Sunday, July 10, knowing a win will take them into the next round.
