WAFU B U17 Girls Cup: Flamingos Thrash Niger Republic 9-0
Nigeria’s U17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, thrashed Niger Republic 9-0 in a thrilling WAFU B U17 Girls Cup encounter, taking place in Ghana.
The Flamingos started brilliantly, with Aishat Animashaun scoring after five minutes following a cross by Mary Mamudu. 2024 FIFA World Cup star Shakirat Moshood then fired in a screamer from 35 yards, beating Nigerien goalkeeper Ndiaye Basiru for the second goal in the 17th minute.
Six minutes later, the ever-relentless Moshood scored her second and Nigeria’s third, assisted by Animashaun. The Nigerians were in the mood and scored another from close range in the 33rd minute through Janet Akekoromowei to make it 4-0.
Akekoromowei then eased past Nigerien defenders in the 42nd minute to power home for Nigeria’s fifth and then completed a hat-trick moments later with a powerful header.
Moshood, not to be outdone, scored her own hat-trick in the 45th minute to make the scores 7-0 against their neighbours at half time. Moshood scored again just before the hour, collecting the ball high up the pitch and making a solo drive to fire past Ndiaye for her fourth and Nigeria’s eighth.
With 11 minutes left on the clock, Peace Effiong opted to have her own name on the scoresheet, firing from outside the box to beat Ndiaye for Nigeria’s ninth and final goal in the thrilling encounter.
