The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it is going ahead with its planned nationwide protest due to commence tomorrow Wednesday 2nd August.
A statement on Tuesday night signed by its President Joe Ajaero said that even the organised labour had just risen from a meeting with the government and did not see any grounds to shelve the protest.
He accused those he called “The fifth columnists” for the rumour which filtered that labour may suspend the planned action.
Ajaero called on their affiliates as well as Nigerians to support the cause saying it is in the interest of the citizens.
Some of the demands of labour include the reversal of the policy which removed fuel subsidy, payment of eight months salary owed University Lecturers and the reversal of what it called all anti-people policies.
Meanwhile, the federal government has appealed to labour to shelve the planned protest saying that the Nigerian President is already addressing some of the issues raised by the workers’ representatives.
The Chief of Staff to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila while addressing State House Correspondents after the meeting with the organised labour on Tuesday, said that the nationwide broadcast by the Nigerian President on Monday on national issues showed that the President is a listening President and also sensitive to the plight of the citizens.
He called for restraint on the part of labour to allow the President to address the issues in contention.
With the statement from the NLC however, workers and Nigerians in general have been directed to join the nationwide action.
