The Nigerian Union of Journalists in the Federal Capital Territory has promised to rid the profession of fake journalists.
The chairman of the Union, Federal Capital Territory Council, Emmanuel Ogbeche gave the assurance while fielding questions from journalists after his re-election as chairman of the council in Abuja.
“Journalists in Abuja should expect a more reinvigorated leadership that is committed to the idea of professionalism leadership that will take more seriously the issue of welfare and voice a voice for the society. We intend not only to set an agenda for the government but also to work the talk by proffering solutions.
“We intend to hold a town hall meeting on education in the FCT, it is scandal what is happening in most government owned schools, we feel a town hall meeting will help us to redress the issues there. We also will face the issue of fake and quack journalists more robustly, we didn’t succeed in our first tenure , we have learnt our lessons and hopefully we will do better. If you look at this premises, you’ll see that there are ongoing projects that we intend to complete”
Mr. Ogbeche said the council would also focus on achieving a more robust agenda setting.
Speaking on opposition and building a strong union he said the executive of the Union would keep its doors open to objective criticism and ideas that will improve performance and well-being of members.
At the end of the 7th NUJ FCT Council Triennial Delegates’ Conference, Emmanuel Ogbeche emerged as Chairman of Council with 451 votes against Mr. Donald Ugwu who pulled 69 votes.
Other Executive were returned unopposed. The NUJ FCT Executive are Emmanuel Ogbeche, Chairman.
