Women Group Urges Political Parties to Honour 35% Affirmative Action

A group known as the Women Environment and Youth Development Initiative, WOYODEV in Kwara State has called on Political parties to honor the 35 percent affirmative action in zoning positions within the Local Government Areas of the state.

The Executive Director, WOYODEV, Mrs Apiriola Ajayi made the call during a news conference held in Ilorin, the state capital.

She stated that there was need to address the subtle exclusion of women by political patties in the ongoing local government election primaries in the state.

Low Women Support

She lamented that there was reduced support for women in accordance with various promises and pledges.

Ajayi emphasised the significant barriers to achieving gender parity in political representation.

The group affirmed that the subtle exclusion of female candidates by political parties is a significant barrier to achieving gender parity in political representation.

It therefore  called for a robust appraisal by parties to mitigate this and encourage the prioritisation of women participation for better Kwara.

Supportive Environment

Ajayi also urged civil society organisations, women’s groups, and the media to raise awareness and create a more supportive environment for women in politics in Kwara State

In her contributions, the Chairperson of Strategic Advocacy for Increased Women Participation in Politics, Hajia Bilikisu Oladimeji, disclosed that political parties in Kwara State have neglected the 35 percent affirmative action in zoning positions within local government areas.

She noted that the women’s platform has been monitoring local government primaries and the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission, KWSIEC, in preparation for the upcoming elections.

Oladimeji lamented that parties have not taking into cognizance the 35 per cent affirmative action in zoning position in the local Government elections  but however, commended the state government for setting up machines to ensure that the elections hold.

Oladimeji pointed out that the women platform would continue to follow keenly the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission preparation towards the LG elections coming up in September, 2024.
