Women Journalists swear in new executives in Anambra

The Anambra State Chapter of Nigerian Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, has sworn in new executives. This held at the triennial delegates Conference which took place at Anambra Broadcasting Service ABS Conference Hall, Awka.

Delegates from various chapels who actively participated in the election include: Local Government Information, Radio Nigeria Purity FM, NTA Awka, Unizik FM, NTA Onitsha, State Information, National Light, Orient Daily, Correspondents’, Fides Newspaper and Anambra Broadcasting Service.

The position of Chairperson was contested by two candidates while other candidates were returned unopposed. Frankline Onyekachi emerged as the new Chair person with 53 out of 57 votes cast, while her opponent, Beatrice Onuchukwu had four votes.

Addressing the members of the Association, the Hon. Commissioner for information, represented by the MD/CEO of ABS, Chief Uche Nworah, gave kudos to the women for the peaceful manner they conducted themselves during the election. He charged them to aim at improving themselves by broadening their horizon and not limiting themselves to journalism alone, stressing that technology is a key agent of change that everyone should master, in order to be relevant in society.

Training and sponsorship

Nworah further enjoined the zone leaders of NAWOJ to ensure their members undergo periodic seminars/workshops to know the basics in current news writing, promising to release the ABS conference hall to them at any time of need, in addition to attracting sponsors for such events.

He also applauded the guest lecturer at the occasion, Prof. Stella Okunna of Unizik, the key note speaker, for her lecture titled:  “Gender-based Violence GBV and the role of Women Journalists”, and called on members of NAWOJ to do the needful to eradicate all forms of GBV  in the society.

The Zonal VP, Comrade Stella Igboka, Zonal Secretary, Tina Oluchukwu Ikwegbu, and the newly sworn-in  Chairperson of Anambra NAWOJ, Frankline Onyekachi respectively prayed for peace and unity in the zone.

Anambra state NAWOJ pledged their loyalty and support to the parent body, NUJ at national, zone and state levels.
