The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on Nigerians to opt for bicycles as a cheap means of transportation.

The Corps made the call following the withdrawal of subsidy and consequent hike in fuel price.

The Corps said the use of bicycles would help reduce the sufferings of the people and more so it has no adverse effect on climate.

The Sector Commander of FRSC in Kwara, North Central Nigeria, Fredrick Ade Ogidan, stated this in Ilorin at an event commemorating this year’s United Nations World Bicycle Day.

This year’s event was themed “Celebrating Bicycle in creating more sustainable, healthy and inclusive societies”.

In his message at the bicycle day, the Sector Commander identified the benefits of cycling to health and the environment as an increase in physical activity, reduction in non-communicable diseases such as cancer and diabetes and decrease in air and noise pollution.

He advised the Kwara State government to incorporate bicycle tracks in future road construction to ensure the safety of cyclists.

The FRSC sector commander enjoined bicycle riders to always use helmets whenever they are riding and should install reflectors on the front and rear of their bicycles.

Cycling is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport, fostering environmental stewardship and health”.

Ogidan also encouraged the use of bicycles as a means of eradicating poverty; furthering sustainable development; strengthening education, including physical education for children and young people; promoting health; preventing disease; and facilitating social inclusion and a culture of peace.

The FRSC sector commander with staff, and stakeholders in the cycling industry, took a ride along roads in Ilorin metropolis to sensitize people on the essence of cycling and its benefits.
