Senator Lawan made the call in a statement, on Sunday, to commemorate the World Cancer Day 2024.

The day is observed annually on February 4th, to raise awareness about cancer, encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment, and mobilize action against the disease.

In the statement issued to mark the day, Senator Lawan expressed deep concern over the rising incidence of cancer in Nigeria and around the world, noting that cancer remains a leading cause of death globally, with millions of new cases diagnosed each year.

“Cancer is a devastating disease that affects not only individuals but also families and communities. It is a major public health challenge that requires our collective attention and action,” Senator Lawan said.

EARLY DETECTION

The former Senate President underscored the importance of early detection and treatment in improving cancer outcomes.

He urged Nigerians to be proactive in seeking regular checkups and screenings, particularly for common cancers such as breast, cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancers.

Senator Lawan also emphasized the need for improved access to affordable and quality cancer care services.

He called on the Nigerian government to increase investment in cancer research, the development of new and more effective treatments, and the establishment of comprehensive cancer centers across the country.

The lawmaker representing Yobe North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, urged Nigerians to adopt healthy lifestyles to reduce their risk of developing cancer.

He advised Nigerians to engage in regular physical activity, maintain a healthy diet, avoid tobacco use, and limit alcohol consumption.

“Cancer prevention is key to reducing the burden of the disease. By making healthy choices and taking preventive measures, we can significantly lower our risk of developing cancer,” Senator Lawan said.
