World Food Day-WFP Calls for Action to Prevent Hunger
Ene Okwanihe, Abuja
The World Food Programme (WFP) has called for actions to address the root causes of food crises to prevent another year of hunger around the world.
The WFP in its World Food Day message says the world is at risk of yet another year of record hunger as the global food crisis continues to drive yet more people into worsening levels of food insecurity.
Building on this year’s theme for World Food Day – “No one left behind” the World Food Programme is calling for coordinated efforts across governments, financial institutions (IFIs), private sector, and partners to mitigate an even more severe food crisis in 2023.
This includes the reinforcement of national economies, social protection systems, and regional and domestic food systems.
WFP Executive Director David Beasley, said the world is facing an unprecedented global food crisis and all signs suggest the worst is yet to come unless action are taken to mitigate the root causes.
“For the last three years hunger numbers have repeatedly hit new peaks. Let me be clear: things can and will get worse unless there is a large scale and coordinated effort to address the root causes of this crisis. We cannot have another year of record hunger,”
WFP Representative and Country Director in Nigeria, Guy Adoua Called for people to remember the over one million malnourished children who need nutritious food to survive and ensure that no one of them is left behind.
“As we mark this year’s World Food Day, we must remember the vulnerable families and individuals in northeast Nigeria who are struggling to put food on their table”.
