World Leaders Pay Tributes To Pope Francis

Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, following complications from double pneumonia. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from world leaders, who have honoured his legacy of humility, compassion, and advocacy for the marginalised.​

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the death of His Holiness, Pope Francis, describing the late pontiff as a ‘humble servant of God’ and ‘a powerful voice for justice, peace, and the poor.’

The White House also posted “Rest in Peace, Pope Francis” on X.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance also paid tribute to the late Pope.

Former U.S. President Joe Biden praised Pope Francis as a man of profound faith and humility.

Former president Barack Obama said, “Pope Francis was the rare leader who made us want to be better people.”

In the United Kingdom, King Charles III and Queen Camilla expressed their “heavy hearts,” acknowledging the Pope’s compassion and tireless commitment to people of faith.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described him as “a Pope for the poor, the downtrodden, and the forgotten.”

President Emmanuel Macron of France remembered Pope Francis as “a man of humility, on the side of the most vulnerable and most fragile.”​

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz paid tribute to the Pope as “an advocate for the weak, a reconciler, and a warm-hearted person.”​

President Vladimir Putin of Russia acknowledged Pope Francis’s efforts to promote dialogue between the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches.​

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy honoured the Pope’s ability to “give hope, ease suffering through prayer, and foster unity.”​

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India expressed being “deeply pained” by the Pope’s death, highlighting his global influence.

Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, expressed condolences, and the government declared three days of official mourning in the pope’s home country.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa praised Pope Francis’s “extraordinary life story” and his “care for marginalised individuals and groups”, highlighting his efforts to make the Church and the world better places.

President William Ruto of Kenya referred to the Pope’s death as a “big loss” to the Christian world, commending his “unwavering commitment to inclusivity and justice.”

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema described Pope Francis as “a man of great humility and compassion who led the Catholic Church by example,” expressing solidarity with Catholics and Christians worldwide.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania expressed condolences, describing the Pope as a leader and educator who devoted his life to advancing world peace, human progress, and well-being.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed his condolences, wishing that Pope Francis’s “legacy of compassion, humility, and service to humanity continue to inspire generations to come.”
