The heads of nine UN agencies and the Global Water Partnership have urgently called for governments to prioritize integrated water and climate action, a UN spokesman said.

Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the plea came in a letter addressed to heads of state and government.

The letter urges governments to more effectively address the water dimensions of climate change adaptation and mitigation.

“Accelerated action is urgently needed to address the water-related consequences of climate change that impact people and the planet.”

He said a UN-agreed framework to accelerate progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 6 contains just such an integrated approach. It seeks to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
