The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has commended the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) for the improved utilisation of Nigeria’s raw materials for sustainable industrial growth and for organising a groundbreaking programme presentation and dialogue event.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of platforms that foster collaboration between policymakers, researchers, and private sector stakeholders.
“I would like to commend your efforts to promote dialogue on improved utilisation of Nigeria’s raw materials for sustainable industrial growth. Nigeria would benefit by processing its wealth of raw materials locally and exporting finished goods. This is part of our re-globalisation drive at the WTO and will help Nigeria’s further integration into global supply chains and facilitate sustainable development,” she stated.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala expressed optimism and looks forward to the WTO collaborating with the RMRDC in the future.
The event, held in Abuja, focused on enhancing Nigeria’s industrial development and global trade competitiveness through local raw materials sourcing and strategic partnerships.

The dialogue featured presentations on key programmes developed by the RMRDC to support industries in accessing locally sourced materials.
Panel discussions explored ways to reduce dependency on imports, strengthen Nigeria’s supply chain resilience, and position the country as a hub for regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The Director-General of the RMRDC, Prof. Nnanyelugo M. Ike-Muonso, emphasised the council’s commitment to fostering industrial development.
He noted that the council’s mission is to support the private sector with the tools and knowledge necessary to leverage local resources for sustainable production.
He remarked that the maiden event represents an essential step in the strategy to improve Nigeria’s industrial outlook.
The successful dialogue reflects Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable growth through local innovation and international cooperation.
