X Opens Free Audio, Video Calls to All Users
X platform has unlocked the capability for non-paying users to initiate audio and video calls across both Android and iOS platforms. The feature was previously a premium subscription service, formerly recognized as Twitter Blue.
Enrique Barragan, an engineer for the company, shared the news on the platform.
“We’re slowly rolling out audio and video calling to non-premium users, try it out! now you can also choose to allow calls from everyone,” Barragan wrote.

The company initially launched the feature for iOS users last year, giving paying subscribers the option to call other people through the app, which was a step towards making X the “everything” application Elon Musk wants it to be.
Earlier this year, the capability made its way to Android devices, but the ability to make calls remained limited to Premium subscribers only.
By the end of January, Musk said that X will make audio-video calling available to everyone as soon as the company is confident that it’s robust.
“As soon as we are confident that it is robust, A/V calling will roll out widely to X users,” Musk said.

Currently, a subscription to X Premium is required to make calls through the phone icon in DMs. However, those who receive the update will be able to make calls without being a paying subscriber.
According to the latest update on the official support page of X, all users of the platform can now enjoy the feature of making and receiving calls. However, a prerequisite for using this feature is that both parties must have established contact via Direct Messaging at least once.
This is a significant change from the previous policy, which restricted audio and video calls only to premium subscribers. This update will enable more users to communicate through voice and video calls, making the platform more accessible and user-friendly.
Alongside the announcement of the feature’s launch, Barragan unveiled that users will now have the option to receive calls from any individual on the app at their discretion.
The functionality for audio and video calls has been seamlessly integrated into the DMs’ Settings menu, where users can effortlessly toggle their preferences. Calls are set to be received solely from those they follow, ensuring a tailored and secure communication experience.
