The Committee of Youth on Mobilisation and Sensitisation (CYMS) has announced plans to host a two-day National Conference on Local Government Autonomy, aimed at promoting dialogue and practical strategies for strengthening governance at the grassroots level across the country.

This was disclosed by the Director General of CYMS, Chief Obinna Nwaka, who said the planned conference has attracted the attention of the Presidency through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

According to him, the conference follows an official correspondence from the Presidency, conveyed through the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office, and signed on Tuesday, 23 December 2025, by Mr Abdulmajeed Abubakar, Deputy Director, Political Research and Constitutional Matters.

The letter requested the formal presentation of details and plans for the proposed National Conference, underscoring its significance in addressing issues of local government administration and autonomy nationwide.

Chief Nwaka explained that the two-day conference, proposed to hold in the first quarter of 2026, will have the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, as the Special Guest of Honour.

He noted that the event will convene key stakeholders, including government officials, local government administrators, community leaders and youth leaders, to deliberate on strategies for strengthening good governance at the grassroots, ensuring accountability and fostering effective collaboration with the Federal Government.

Participants are expected to engage in constructive discussions geared towards shaping policies that will enhance efficiency and service delivery in local governance.

Emphasising the relevance of the conference, Chief Obinna Nwaka stated that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said “this conference will serve as a platform to escalate and create more awareness on the implementation of local government Autonomy through encouraging stakeholders to voice their concerns and contribute to meaningful reforms in our local governance structures.”

He added that the conference will also serve as a platform for advocacy and policy engagement, while honouring individuals who have made significant contributions to grassroots development and local government administration.

The conference is also expected to highlight the challenges confronting local governments and explore practical solutions to enhance autonomy and improve service delivery at the community level.

As preparations intensify, CYMS has called on stakeholders and interested participants to actively engage in the dialogue on the future of local governance in Nigeria.

Further details on the venue, dates and registration process are expected to be announced by the Planning Committee in the second week of January 2026.
